Video: Light Up a Fireplace with Chasing Lights
If you’ve ever seen “chasing” mini lights in action and wondered how they get that moving look — this video is a quick, easy demo. Chasing lights are one of my favorite ways to add motion without getting complicated: they bring energy to trees, shrubs, rooflines, and garlands in a way steady-on lights just can’t.
In this clip, Shellie shows the effect up close and helps you picture where chasing lights work best — whether you want a clean “running” pattern along a straight line, or a more scattered sparkle when placed randomly in greenery.
Where Chasing Lights Look Best
- Rooflines & railings: a straight run makes the chase pattern read clearly.
- Tree trunks & wrapped columns: adds motion without overpowering the display.
- Shrubs & trees: random placement softens the “line” and feels more like twinkle.
- Garlands & wreaths: great for a subtle animated accent.
Tip: If you want “chase,” install in clean lines. If you want “sparkle,” place more randomly. Same lights — totally different vibe.
