Five Critical Steps to Reduce Christmas Tree Fire Risk

1. Keep Your Real Tree Fresh & Hydrated

  • Cut ½–1 inch off the trunk (or have the lot do it) before placing in stand
  • Use a stand with at least 1-gallon water reservoir — check and refill daily
  • Never let the reservoir run dry (the trunk seals in as little as 4–6 hours)
  • Remove the tree within 7–10 days after it begins dropping needles

2. Place Tree Away from Heat Sources

Keep tree at least 3 feet from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles, and heat vents.

3. Be Electrically Responsible

  • Never exceed 210 watts connected end-to-end (current UL limit)
  • Stay under 1000 watts total per household circuit
  • Use heavy-duty extension cords rated for the load
  • Choose LED lights — they run cool and draw far less power
  • Never cut, splice, or modify series-wired light strings
  • Have a licensed electrician inspect large displays

4. Inspect Pre-Lit Artificial Trees

Check for cracked sockets, frayed wires, or loose connections. Replace any damaged strings immediately.

5. Use a Timer & Never Leave Lights Unattended

Turn lights off when leaving home or going to bed. A quality timer with surge protection is inexpensive peace of mind.
