Making memories with your kids is one of the highlights of every holiday season. There are hundreds of things to do that can assist in making each Christmas a memorable one for both you and your family. While some Christmas traditions may be faith based or society based it is the traditions that are passed down through the family that are the most memorable. Some of the common traditions are making cookies, making ornaments, getting the tree and decorating it.
Getting the Tree
It is a tradition for many people to head out to the Christmas tree farm to find the perfect tree for the year. Everyone dresses up warmly. Some families designate a person to cut the tree, another to pick it or it might be a tradition for just the guys. It varies from family to family based on location, cultural differences and personal preferences. You can even turn it into a game of winter hide and seek; this should be done with older children or with younger children being supervised in areas that experience cold winters. It is also a time for carols many people sing Christmas carols while on their way to and from the farm or while looking for a tree.
For those that do not have access to a Christmas tree farm there are a number of alternatives. The first is the Christmas tree selling locations, these are either tents or they can be found at local super center style stores. This is if you want a large tree. There are a number of people who forgo this in favor of the plastic equivalent.
Setting up and decorating the tree
Setting up the Christmas tree and decorating it one of the biggest traditions that most people have. The ornaments and lights come out and everyone pitches in with ideas of where to place things, or everyone pitches in to place the ornaments. There are some families who designate different types of ornaments or decorations to individuals. This is a great way to get kids involved and make them feel like an important part of the process.
Making Decorations
Part of decorating the tree can also be the process of creating ornaments. There are some families with the tradition of doing this every year and it is a great way to make a Christmas memorable. There are a variety of different types of traditions that go with making decorations. Some families make decorations out of the pictures they have taken either throughout the year or use the yearly photos taken for the holidays themselves or during school. This can be done with a bit of felt or done with a wooden frame. Another option is to make a themed decoration. The theme should be something memorable, something from the year that is important enough or significant enough to create the theme of the year. For example soccer ball ornament made out of wood or even plastic canvas as a way of expressing the win at a soccer game or championship. This can be different for each person in the family, whatever is most important to them from the previous year. You can even combine the traditions of ornament making and cookie making by making edible goodies for your tree.
Setting up the Nativity
For some people the setting up of the nativity is a family tradition and one that helps to create memories for the kids. This is especially true if they are just old enough to finally understand the story and meanings behind it. Helping to up pack each item, cleaning them, telling the story of each individual in the nativity and the role they play can be a time honored memory that sets the mood and tone for Christmas.
Making Cookies
No Christmas would be complete without the delightful homemade cookies that are a mainstay of Christmas foods. There are hundreds even thousands of recipes and some families have their own special way of making even the classics. It is one activity even small children can help with. They can help to cut out the cookies, or decorate them and older children can help with mixing and measuring. This can be done even if you do not have the time to make them by hand thanks to a delightful variety of ready made mixes and refrigerated dough that can be found at any supermarket.
Caroling
Caroling is a little different than just singing Christmas carols and children can enjoy a wonderful time with this particular activity. Caroling involves going from house to house singing carols usually without accompaniment though some have small instruments. This is one memory making tradition that will take a little preseason practice but is well worth the time and effort it takes to prepare. Caroling can also be part of a community activity by visiting the hospitals and elderly.
Making Christmas Cards
Here is one fun away to not only individualize Christmas for everyone on your list but allow the creativity of your kids to flow. You can simplify the process by getting card making kits which are available at your local craft supply store. These kits come with everything you need to make a variety of different styles and types of cards. This is a great way to get started if you are just starting out or if you do not have a lot of time. If you have the time and the patience then your local craft store will have a variety of different supplies to provide you with everything needed for your own design.
These are just some of the ways you can take Christmas activities and traditions and turn them into ways of making memories with your kids. From getting the tree, to setting it up, making decorations and decorating the tree, card making, cookie making, and community activities like caroling, there are dozens of ways to make each and every holiday season stand out for your family.
